Our entire program has gained an edge because we have trained the mind better than our opponents. Our players are more confident and focused, especially during the toughest moments when we need them to be at their best.

Jake Gilbert

Former State Championship FB Coach
Current College FB Coach

Without mental toughness, one mistake can lead to a long slump or a couple long innings pitching. Coach Carnes’ mental tactics helped me in high school and continue to help me today pitching at the highest level.

Ryan Pepiot

MLB Pitcher

As a QB, our son helped to lead his 6A football team to back-to-back state runner-up titles. Grateful to Ben Carnes and for the mental training program which prepared our son for the toughest situations on the field and that will follow him in his personal life.

The mental training I did with Coach Carnes was just as important—if not more—than my physical training. Whether in high school, college, or now in the real world, I continue to use these tools regularly!

Nick Ferrer

The academy put together by Coach Carnes gives our entire program the ability to have a systematic approach across all teams in targeting areas of growth for mental development.

The mental side of sports is not talked about enough. This year I was able to improve the mental side of my golf game and the results were incredible. Being mentally tough and learning to let go of bad shots is crucial to maximizing performance.

Frequently asked questions

1. What is mental performance training?

Mental performance training is a structured approach to improving an athlete’s mindset, focus, confidence, and resilience in competition. Just like physical training strengthens the body, mental training helps athletes and teams develop essential mental skills such as handling pressure, overcoming self-doubt, maintaining focus, and improving motivation. These techniques are used by elite athletes, college programs, and professional teams to gain a competitive edge and perform at their best when it matters most.

2. Who is mental training for?

Mental training is beneficial for athletes of all levels, teams, and coaches who want to improve focus, confidence, and overall performance under pressure. Whether you are a youth athlete, high school competitor, college player, or professional athlete, mental performance coaching can help you develop skills that enhance decision-making, emotional control, and consistency in high-pressure situations. Coaches also benefit from mental training by learning how to implement team-wide mindset strategies through structured programs like MTP Academy.

3. How does MTP Academy work for teams?

MTP Academy is a team-focused mental training program designed to help coaches implement proven mental performance strategies with their athletes. The program provides structured training modules, exercises, and mindset techniques that teams can use to improve focus, discipline, teamwork, and mental resilience. It gives coaches a step-by-step framework to integrate mental training into their team culture, practices, and game preparation. This program is ideal for high school and college teams looking to build a mentally tough, high-performing program.

4. What is MTP One, and how does it help individual athletes?

MTP One is a personalized, one-on-one mental performance coaching program designed to help athletes overcome mental barriers, improve confidence, and maximize their performance in competition. Each athlete receives a customized training plan tailored to their specific needs, whether it’s handling game-day pressure, developing a pre-game routine, improving focus, or staying motivated. Athletes who engage in MTP One gain practical tools to control their emotions, build self-belief, and perform at their peak when it matters most.

5. How can I schedule a free mental performance consultation?

Athletes, parents, and coaches can schedule a free 20-minute mental training consultation to discuss specific challenges, performance goals, and the best training approach for their needs. During this consultation, we will assess current mental skills, identify areas for improvement, and provide recommendations for training programs like MTP Academy for teams or MTP One for individuals. To book a session, visit our scheduling page and select a time that works best for you.

6. How long does mental training take to see results?

Many athletes and teams begin noticing improvements in focus, confidence, and body control within the first few sessions. However, consistent mental training over time is key to achieving long-term success. Just like physical training, mental skills require regular practice, reinforcement, and adjustment to become automatic in high-pressure situations. Often, we can help an athlete regain control when their mind or body instinctively react to a situation fairly quickly. However, reprogramming the mind and body to prevent such strong reactions in the first place takes more time and repetition.

Think of stepping off a curb and suddenly hearing a car horn blast. Your body instinctively jerks back without conscious thought—this is an automatic fight-or-flight response driven by past experiences and neural conditioning. We can quickly teach skills to regulate heart rate, refocus, and regain control after a stress response, but the next time it happens you might still be startled.

Now image you were to move to New York City, where honking cars are constant, your brain would gradually adapt to the noise and eventually stop reacting so strongly. This desensitization happens because the brain rewires itself through repeated exposure, forming new neural pathways that change how it interprets and responds to stimuli.

The same principle applies to mental training—with consistent practice, athletes can reshape their automatic responses, allowing them to stay calm, focused, and in control under pressure instead of being overwhelmed by stress or distractions. Rather than having the reaction and then regaining control, you can eventually learn to change how you react in the first place!

7. Is mental training only for elite athletes?

No, mental training is valuable for athletes of all levels—from youth sports to professional athletes. Many people assume that only elite competitors need mental training, but the truth is that developing confidence, focus, and emotional control benefits anyone looking to improve their performance, consistency, and mindset. Whether you are a beginner struggling with nerves or an experienced athlete looking for a competitive edge, mental training can help you elevate your game.

8. Do you offer mental training for coaches?

Yes, MTP offers mental performance training for coaches through our MTP Certification program. This certification equips coaches with the knowledge, tools, and techniques needed to integrate mental toughness training, team-building exercises, and mindset coaching into their existing programs. Coaches who complete the certification can lead their teams through structured mental training sessions, helping athletes develop resilience, leadership, and mental discipline.

9. How is mental training different from sports psychology?

Mental training and sports psychology share similar principles, but they have distinct focuses. Sports psychology often involves clinical aspects of mental health, working with athletes to address issues such as anxiety, depression, or emotional well-being. Mental training, on the other hand, is a practical, performance-based approach that teaches athletes mental skills and strategies to enhance focus, confidence, motivation, and competitive mindset. Mental training is proactive and action-oriented, helping athletes apply techniques in real-time to improve performance on the field, court, or track.

10. How do I get started with mental training?

The best way to get started with mental training is by scheduling a free consultation or exploring our programs:

MTP Academy for teams and coaches looking to implement structured mental training.

MTP One for individual athletes seeking personalized mental coaching.
